Malaysian hardwood

Malaysian hardwood is taken from the same tree that produces the latex to make rubber. The tree is native to Brazil, and is used in plantations in Malaysia. Seedlings were taken to Malaysia in 1877, and by 1992 there were about 1.8 million hectares of rubberwood trees.

Malaysia owes a lot of its prosperity to rubberwood trees and are now world leaders in the cultivation, use, and research of this timber. Up to only 15 or so years ago, when the tree stopped producing latex, they were simply bulldozed to the corner of a paddock and burnt. Now they are used for a vast range of timber products. This makes the rubberwood tree a very versatile tree!

Rubberwood is now highly prized as a timber resource. It is a hardwood possessing extremely durable and attractive qualities well suited to furniture making.
